How to get cited in Google AI Overviews: what Google actually says

Guide by Dottpace Research · Last updated

To be cited in Google's AI Overviews, a page has to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Google Search; Google says there are no additional technical requirements, no special files and no special schema markup. Beyond that, the pages that get cited tend to be ones that already rank well and answer the question directly, so the work is ordinary SEO done well, plus making sure no snippet setting quietly excludes you.

AI Overviews, the AI-written summaries at the top of many Google results, link to a few sources. Being one of them can bring clicks even when the summary answers the question. A whole industry now sells "AI Overview optimization". This guide sticks to what Google itself documents, then adds what independent studies have measured, clearly labeled as studies.

What does Google say a page needs to appear in AI Overviews?

Google's page AI features and your website (last updated December 10, 2025) is the primary source. Its key lines:

To be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be "indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet."

Google Search Central, paraphrased around the quoted words

It adds that "there are no additional technical requirements", that you don't need to create "new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup", and that "there's also no special schema.org structured data that you need to add". The same SEO basics that make a page eligible for normal results make it eligible here.

Google also explains that AI Overviews and AI Mode may use "query fan-out": they run several related searches across subtopics while building an answer. That's why a page can be cited for a question it doesn't literally target, as long as it answers one of the sub-questions well.

What doesn't matter, according to Google?

  • llms.txt or other AI text files. Not required. See does llms.txt work?
  • Special schema markup. There's no "AI Overview schema". Structured data still helps Google understand pages, and it should match what's visible on the page.
  • The Google-Extended token. It controls use of content for Gemini training and grounding; Google says it doesn't affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search, and AI Overviews are part of Search.

What do studies say about which pages get cited?

These are third-party analyses, not Google statements, so read them as patterns:

  • Cited pages usually rank well already. Ahrefs analyzed 1.9 million citations from 1 million AI Overviews (published July 21, 2025) and found that 76.1% of cited pages ranked in Google's top 10 for the query, and about 86% in the top 100. Other analyses with different methods have reported lower overlap, so treat the exact number loosely; the direction is consistent.
  • Clear, sourced writing helps. In the GEO research paper (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024), adding quotations, statistics and cited sources raised a page's visibility in generative answers by roughly 28–43% on the paper's main measure, while keyword stuffing did worse than no change.

The practical reading: you won't skip the ranking work, but a page that states the answer plainly, backs it with specific facts and covers the follow-up questions gives an AI summary more to quote.

How do you write a page that AI Overviews can quote?

  1. Answer first. Put a one- or two-sentence direct answer near the top, then the detail. The same structure helps featured snippets and human readers.
  2. Use headings that match real follow-up questions, such as "How long does it take?", "How much does it cost?", "What if…?". Query fan-out looks for exactly these sub-answers.
  3. Be specific. Numbers, prices, dates, steps, named sources. "Most repairs take 2–3 hours and cost $150–$300 in Austin" is quotable; "we offer affordable, fast service" isn't.
  4. Show who's behind it. Google's guidance on helpful content asks who created it, how and why. Name the company, date the page, link to sources.
  5. Keep it one topic per page, and link related pages to each other so Google sees the whole picture.

Which settings can quietly remove you?

Google lists the controls that limit what appears from your pages in Search, and they apply to AI features too:

  • noindex: the page isn't indexed, so it can't be cited anywhere in Search.
  • nosnippet: no text snippet. Since eligibility for AI features requires being able to show a snippet, a page with nosnippet gives up being a supporting link too.
  • max-snippet:0 or a very low max-snippet: limits how much text Google may show.
  • data-nosnippet on an HTML element: excludes that part of the page from snippets.

These are sometimes set by a theme, an SEO plugin or a cautious developer and forgotten. Check the page source for robots meta tags and the X-Robots-Tag header on your important pages. If you add or remove a control, Google suggests confirming it with URL Inspection and allowing time for a recrawl.

How do you see AI Overview traffic in Search Console?

Google says sites appearing in AI features are included in overall Search traffic and reported in Search Console's Performance report under the "Web" search type. There's no separate AI Overview filter in that report, so you can't isolate those clicks there. Two practical signals:

  • Queries where impressions hold or rise but clicks fall can mean an AI Overview now answers the question on the results page.
  • Checking the result page for your key questions, on a schedule, tells you whether an AI Overview appears and whom it cites.

Dottpace AI Search records AI Overviews and AI Mode for your chosen questions every week, along with ChatGPT and other assistants, and shows who's cited instead of you.

What if your page isn't indexed at all?

Then nothing above applies yet. Start with why a website doesn't show up on Google: indexing is the entry ticket for both blue links and AI Overviews.
